When I was younger and first acquired a taste for Star Trek I became very confuzzled by the word "ensign". I looked it up and found it to be a reference to some sort of flag. Didn´t seem to make sense in their cannonfodder context. Now I now that ensign is the short form for the military designation "Ensign Second Lieutenant", which about corresponds with the Swedish military term "Fänrik".
