My Federation

This was my first filksong in English, it's still kinda OK I guess, but the pacing was really adlibbed so nowadays I think of it as more of a poem.
It's about the Redshirts in Star Trek: The Original Series. Redshirt is/was a popular term for the kind of Star Trek actor who got introduced in the first scene only to be killed off in the second, making it look like the main characters were in grave danger. This plot development twist was so commonly used in the original series that all minor actors wearing red begun to be refered to as "Ensign Redshirt".

Redshirts are to be shot down
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
Just because they´re beaming down
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
Their bodies do look awful c-c-cold
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
They all do die before they get old
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)

This is my Federation
This is my Federation, baby

They know they have to boldly go
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
When Captains say to make it so
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
We think of them as absent friends
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
´Cos once ashore their lifespan ends
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)

This is my Federation
This is my Federation, baby

Their character´s irrelevant
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
And don´t get no development
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
They have no family, friends or nieces
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
Their mission is to go in pieces
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)

This is my Federation
This is my Federation, baby

They never seem to f-f-fade away
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
And never more than one line s-s-say
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
One survive would be a big s-s-sensation
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
Maybe in The Next-Next-Next Generation
(Talkin' 'bout my Federation)
